VMSCORE™ is supporting AV1 and is ready for the future!

Introduction

The AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) codec is a next-generation, royalty-free video compression standard developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Designed to deliver higher compression efficiency than older codecs like H.264 and even HEVC (H.265), AV1 offers significant benefits for IP cameras used in security, surveillance, and smart home systems.

In the context of IP cameras, AV1’s primary advantage is its ability to maintain high video quality at much lower bitrates. This translates to reduced bandwidth usage and lower storage requirements—crucial considerations for surveillance systems that stream or archive video continuously. AV1 is especially well-suited for high-resolution footage (e.g., 4K and beyond), which is becoming increasingly common in modern IP camera deployments.

Moreover, the open and royalty-free nature of AV1 helps manufacturers avoid licensing fees associated with proprietary codecs like H.265, making it an attractive option for long-term, scalable deployments.

Summary:

  • H.264 is still widely used due to compatibility and low resource needs, but it’s inefficient for high-resolution video
  • H.265 improves efficiency but comes with licensing fees and limited browser support.
  • AV1 excels in compression and future-proofing, ideal for bandwidth- or storage-sensitive IP camera systems, though it currently demands more processing power and is currently not yet widely available on IP Camera’s

VMSCORE™ is supporting AV1 and is ready for the future!

Once IP-Camera’s widely offer AV1, the advantage for the new CODEC is clear. However, it does need more processing power.
